What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift is a surgical procedure performed to help patients become candidates for dental implants. When the upper back teeth are lost, the nearby maxillary sinus cavity tends to expand, depleting jawbone tissue and filling the space once occupied by tooth roots. This can leave too little support to replace these teeth with dental implants, which rely on adequate bone levels for support and function. At ACE Dental of Texas, our qualified team offers sinus lift procedures, also called sinus augmentation, that can help patients enjoy the benefits of implant dentistry. Sinus lifts raise the floor of the sinus cavity and add bone grafting material to fill the space. If you have lost an upper tooth, schedule a consultation at one of our practice locations to find out more about dental implants and sinus lift surgery.

Is a Sinus Lift Right for You?

Patients who have lost upper premolar or molar teeth may be good candidates for sinus augmentation. A sinus lift may be ideal if you lack sufficient bone height or quality in the upper jaw, the sinus cavities have expanded or are too large, or the proximity of the sinus floor is too close to where implants should be placed. In your consultation with ACE Dental, advanced 3D cone beam imaging will be used to evaluate jaw and sinuses to determine if a sinus lift procedure is an appropriate course of action to prepare your mouth for a dental implant.

What Is the Treatment Process?

Sinus lift augmentation is an advanced surgical procedure performed under local anesthetic in our state-of-the-art facilities. Sedation dentistry may also be used to enhance your treatment comfort. Once you are ready, an incision will be made in the soft tissue near the back of your mouth. Your tissue will be retracted to reveal the jawbone, and special instruments will be used to access the sinus. With a gentle technique, the sinus floor will be raised and bone grafting material will be added to fill the vacant space while holding the sinus in its new position. After sutures are placed, the area will be given time to heal before placing dental implants in the jaw.

Recovery Following Sinus Augmentation

Following your sinus lift, you may be written a prescription for pain relievers to help keep you comfortable during recovery. Special instructions on how to best care for your mouth as you heal will also be provided by our team. A follow-up visit may be scheduled about 1 – 2 weeks following your sinus surgery for suture removal. The bone graft will require several months to heal until an implant can be placed. During this time, it is important to keep up with good oral hygiene habits at home each day and schedule routine dental checkups at ACE Dental to maintain your oral health.

Insurance Coverage for Sinus Lifts

If you carry dental insurance, we will contact your provider to review your policy and learn if any portion of your care will be covered. ACE Dental is dedicated to helping you get the care needed for better oral health and can assist you in applying for special financing to cover any personal costs. Our practices also accept a range of convenient payment options to help make caring for your smile as simple as possible.

Find Implant Success with Sinus Augmentation

Dental implants are often an excellent option for replacing upper back teeth but do require a certain level of support to best meet your needs. To increase your candidacy for implants in the upper jaw, our team is pleased to offer sinus lift surgery, which can gently reposition the sinus floor. If you are considering a dental implant, we encourage you to contact ACE Dental of Texas to explore whether a sinus lift can help make your treatment more successful.
