About Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a common solution for addressing a variety of restorative dentistry needs. Covering a tooth from the gumline up, crowns are custom-crafted to a precise shape, size, and shade to restore function and appearance to damaged teeth. At ACE Dental of Texas, our dentists are highly skilled in dental crowns and other prosthodontics procedures and utilize advanced technology to deliver quality, natural-looking results. Crowns, also called dental caps, are routinely used to treat moderate tooth decay, as well as worn, broken, or cracked teeth. As a full-service practice, we also place crowns on single dental implants to complete tooth replacement procedures. Make a consultation at one of our convenient locations to find out how a crown can repair a damaged tooth while improving the health and appearance of your smile!

Is a Crown Right for You?

While dental fillings are often ideal for minor restorative needs, crowns may be recommended for teeth that have suffered more extensive damage. Crowns can be placed on the front or back teeth and may be used to rebuild, strengthen, or enhance:

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Moderate-sized cavities
  • Worn or cracked teeth
  • Discolored or misshapen teeth
  • Teeth with old or large fillings
  • Root canal-treated teeth
  • Single dental implants
  • Tooth replacement with dental bridges

ACE Dental is pleased to offer crowns made from high-quality materials, including all-porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and all-metal options. During your consultation, our dentists will review your choices and help you select the best crown material for your needs and budget.

The Dental Crown Process

Crowns are typically completed within two visits to our dental practice. At the first appointment, our team will numb your tooth for comfort and remove damaged tooth structure. Sedation dentistry may be available if you feel anxious when receiving care. Once your tooth is prepared, we will take a digital impression using iTero technology, which heightens our ability to customize the shape and fit of your crown. While our partner dental lab creates your restoration, a temporary crown will be worn to protect your tooth. About 1 – 2 weeks later, we will have you return so we can remove the temporary and bond your new crown to your tooth or attach it to a (previously placed) dental implant. Adjustments may be made to ensure a comfortable bite and fit.

Caring for Your Crown

Special instructions on caring for your new crown will be provided by a member of our staff. Keep in mind, the tooth structure beneath the crown can still become decayed, making it very important to maintain brushing and flossing at home each day. During your routine dental checkups at ACE Dental, our team will evaluate your dental crown and the health of your underlying tooth. With good care, dental crowns can protect your tooth for many years to come. If your crown ever comes off or feels loose, contact our office right away. Please do not try to repair or reattach it on your own since this may damage your tooth or restoration.

Are Crowns Covered by Insurance?

Dental crowns are often covered in part by most major dental insurance plans. To learn about your specific coverage, our experienced insurance specialist will review your benefits and talk with you about your personal costs. ACE Dental strives to provide affordable dental care for all patients and accepts a number of convenient payment methods. We can assist you in applying for financing plans and are happy to help you find a budget-friendly option to meet your needs.
